Rainbow beauty
- scientific name: Nothobranchius guentheri
- Description:
- AVAILABILITY: Common
- DIFFICULTY: Easy
- INCUBATION: 2 Months
- REGION: The island of Zanzibar, Tanzania. Of special note, N. guentheri has been introduced into several other areas of the world for mosquito control. There are no reports of long-term survival.
- NOTES: Without a doubt, this is one of the best species for a new Notho enthusiast to attempt. N. guentheri is easily bred, the fry are large enough to take newly hatched brine shrimp immediately and grow relatively fast. The males can be sexually aggressive and it is wise to maintain the sexes separately. It is common to see males sparring with each other and they are best kept in large groups so the dominant males do not drive the smaller ones to death.

Black fire
- scientific name:Nothobranchius patrizii
- Description:
- Nothobranchius patrizii can easily be reproduced in water with following characteristics: pH of 6.8 to 7.0; water hardness between 9-16 and water temperature between 23 and 25 C. Such water can be obtained by mixing rainwater with ordinary tapwater. The addition of salt [1 teaspoon per 10 litres of water] is also advised as a preventive measure against velvet. The maintenance tank should be densely planted in the form of java-fern/moss or similar plants in order to provide females and subordinate males' lots of hiding opportunities. Frequent water changes are also necessary for the wellbeing of the fish. Too high water temperatures will reduce substantially the live expectancy of the fish.
- Males are rather aggressive towards each other. The stronger specimens will definitively push the weaker ones towards the lighter parts of the tank. When the tank is large enough, beaten fins and harmed fishes are rarely seen. In a large tank one can keep several males if each one of them is given about 10-15 litres of water. One has always to avoid to place into a small tank two males; in this case the stronger one will definitively always sue the weaker one and even kill him.
